The coat of arms for the eMalahleni Local Municipal Council was designed by the Bureau of Heraldry and accepted by Municipal Council on the 29th November 2001.
Arriving at a motto for the coat of arms, it was suggested that both the Vision and Mission Statement of the Council be taken into account.
The Vision Statement of the Council is:
“Striving together to be and excellent center for service delivery and development”
The Mission Statement of the Council is:
“Providing affordable, accessible and sustainable quality services, enhance community participation and creating a climate for economic development”
Taking into consideration the vision and mission of Council, the following suggestions were made for the proposed motto of the Council.
- “Together in service delivery and development”
- “Excellent centre for service delivery and development”
- “Participatory service delivery and development
Traditionally, coat of arms comprises of a number of elements or symbols that are reflective of the body they represent.
Examples of these symbols are:
- flora,
- fauna,
- cultural symbols or artifacts,
- Natural phenomena and motto.
This is based on an Nguni-type shield, resting on top of which is a mural crown, customarily used in the arms of municipal authorities.
The shield is so divided that the green central part has the appearance of a power station cooling tower.
On this is placed a Jupiter’s thunderbolt, in allusion to the generating of electricity, and in the lower part a heraldic fountain.
These elements can be seen as referring to the Ga-Nala (Kriel) and Ogies region, with the green also linking the design to agriculture.
On either side are black diamonds which refer to the rich coal deposit in our area. This diamond pattern is repeated on the mural crown.
Provision has been made beneath the shield, for the inclusion of a motto on the riband.
