More than 100 participants from three Districts Municipalities arrived at Emalahleni Local Municipality on Wednesday evening and were warmly received with pleasure and hospitality by the Executive Mayor Lindiwe Ntshalintshali at a gala dinner held at the Civic Centre.
The district municipalities, Enhlanzeni District Municipality, Gert Sibande District Municipality, and Nkangala District Municipality, competed in various sporting codes.
The games known as “Golden Games” are for older persons who are above 60 years, and were held at Puma Stadium in eMalahleni.
Councillor Ntshalintshali encouraged older citizens not to limit their lives on being nannies for their grandchildren.
“Government has made a commitment to look after your health, your wellbeing is important to government and that is the reason senior citizens receive free healthcare in all public health institutions. Government will not stop caring for senior citizens mental and physical health,” she promised.
Ntshalintshali told the participants that senior citizens are custodians of culture and history of any nation.
The gala dinner was attended by, among others, the MEC of Social Development, Busi Shiba, and the Nkangala District Municipality Mayor, L Malatjie.
Senior citizens from all three districts sweetened the gala dinner through choral music they rendered on stage.
