19 March 2019
The Good Green Deeds Programme, was formally launched on the 08th March 2019 by the President of the Republic. The programme is aimed at promoting the Circular Waste Economy and at changing behaviour towards littering and illegal dumping, to shift the paradigm and influence waste management so that it includes the 4Rs (Reduce, Re-use, Recycle and Recover), and to raise waste awareness.
We need to increase our efforts to realise the full potential of this component of the Green Economy to create sustainable livelihoods and to promote recycling within the Waste paradigm.
The Emalahleni Local Municipality and the Department of Environmental Affairs is entrusted with a crucial legislative mandate to ensure all citizens within the municipality live in a clean and healthy environment and use its resources in a sustainable manner for the benefit of current and future generations.
Implementation of environmental programmes has been achieved by forging collaborations with stakeholders operating within the environmental sector, other government institutions and NGOs amongst others.
The objective for this specific programme is to drive towards a clean City which is free of litter, illegal dumping and to encourage sustainable waste management.
The main purpose is to change people’s attitudes and behaviour towards waste and its management, as well as to begin taking charge and responsibility of keeping their neighbourhood clean. It has become evident that many current awareness initiatives lead to visually cleaner areas in the short term, they do not encourage sustainable practices that reduce littering and illegal dumping in the long run and this programme is aimed at closing that missing gap.
More emphasis is required in ensuring that the citizens now take a stand against the litter in their neighbourhoods and start to clean-up their areas.
The Clean and Safe South Africa - Lend a Hand Programme will encourage individuals and organisations to come together to conduct clean-up centred activities. Municipalities together with their communities should participate in the clean-up programmes to ensure that their localities are free of illegal dumps.
This Programme would be declared Clean and Safe South Africa – Lend a Hand Programme.
