About the Municipality

The Place of Coal — the energy heart of Mpumalanga.

Overview

A city built on coal & energy

Established in 1903 and renamed eMalahleni — "the place of coal" — in 2006, the municipality covers eMalahleni, Kwa-Guqa, Ga-Nala and Ogies. It sits within the Nkangala District in Mpumalanga, linked by the N4, N12 and the Maputo Corridor.

As the largest coal-producing area in Africa and home to major power stations such as Duvha, Kendal, Matla and Kusile, Emalahleni is widely known as the energy centre of South Africa, with deep roots in mining, industry and power generation.
