Maanakana Projects and Consulting was appointed by Qubic Consulting on behalf of Emalahleni Local Municipality to conduct Water Use License Application for Ga-Nala Waste Water Treatment Works (WWTW).

The Ga-Nala Waste Water Treatment Works (WWTW) collects the sewage not only from Ga-Nala settlement but also from Thubelihle, as its local WWTW which is completely non-functional due to destruction caused by unidentified perpetrators. Ga-Nala WWTW has a dry-weather design capacity of 4.2 megaliter per day (Ml/d). The plant currently receives an average daily inflow of about 4.0 Ml/d. However, during peak flows (at the 75th percentile), the incoming volume exceeds the plant’s design capacity.

The WWTW is currently unable to produce effluent of acceptable quality, partly due to limitations in its process design. Important improvements could be achieved by upgrading the decommissioned reactor which could include anaerobic and anoxic treatment zones, as well as ensuring that all mechanical and electrical systems are fully operational.
In addition, there is a general lack of backup pumping capacity at the plant. The treated effluent is ultimately discharged into the Steenkoolspruit River. Ga-Nala WWTW has been operating without license, that is the reason the applicant is applying for a Water Use License so Ga-Nala WWTW must be compliant and licensed.
